Having brand new carpeting in your home is a great investment at first, but carpets end up showing signs of wear and tear over time. Fortunately, you can keep your carpet in excellent condition with regular cleaning and care. Use the following tips to help your carpeting looking as good as new.

Vacuum Once A Week

Vacuuming your carpets once a week removes dirt, dust and other debris that builds up in the fibers. This type of debris can make your carpet look more worn than it should when it’s not removed on a regular basis, resulting in a dull appearance. Keep in mind that you should vacuum more than once a week in carpeted parts of your home that get a lot of foot traffic since these areas tend to get even more debris.

Blot Spills Promptly

You can’t completely protect your carpets from spills, but fast action can prevent them from becoming permanent unsightly spots. When something spills on your carpet, use a paper towel and cleaning solution to blot the area as soon as possible. Waiting longer will make the stain more difficult to get rid of. Blot the soiled area gently, and avoid rubbing the spill into the carpet fibers. Rubbing can cause the spill to spread and cover a larger area of your carpet.

Use A Carpet Cleaner For Deep Cleaning

Even when you vacuum regularly and blot spills right away, your carpet can still end up with stubborn dirt, pet hair and other debris that’s hard to remove. This debris can cause your carpet fibers to become worn, which ages your carpeting. Use a commercial carpet cleaner for deep cleaning about every six months. This deep cleaning removes debris that has settled into the bottom of your carpet. You might have to do deep cleaning on your carpets more often if they tend to attract a lot of dirt or debris on a regular basis.

Protect High-Traffic Areas

Carpeting in high-traffic areas in your home, such as hallways and the living room, can easily show signs of wear and tear much sooner than other areas. You can prevent this by placing area rugs in these parts of your home. Area rugs help protect carpeting from foot traffic, which helps it continue looking new for a longer period of time. You can also use runners in hallways to keep these longer lengths of carpeting safe from constant foot traffic.

Skip The Carpet Powders

Carpet powders are commonly used to help deodorize carpets. The drawback to these products is that they tend to leave a white film on carpeting. Although this might not be noticeable at first, this film usually shows up when you deep clean your carpets. Avoid using these types of products on your carpets as much as possible to lower the risk of having this film build up.
